Artist's Description

This is a fitting title—it was midnight, and my collie is Tansy. Her AKC name is also “Midnight Tansy”. Tansy was in a large litter of collie pups. The ad in the paper said “collies, 8 wks old”. When my kids and I went to check them out (I LOVE collies), we found 5 MONTH old dogs—bedraggled, and many of them bloody and scarred. It took 3 tries to get in touch with the “breeder” (I use the term loosely). Turned out, he’d been in trouble with the dog warden a number of times. When I finally was able to see the pups, there was one tri-color—a lovely female, who stayed away from the other more aggressive females. I was able to acquire her for $75—“papers” and all.
Tansy was unsocialized. She’d never been handled by kind human hands. When her brothers fought, the owner turned an icy hose on them (they were born on Halloween, so it was winter when we got her). To this day, I have no idea what happened to the rest of the dogs—I heard they were taken from that breeder. Tansy still hates the hose. She’s now 9 years old, and has a few quirks, but she’s loving and playful—still acts like a pup!
Tansy completes our 3-dog, 2-cat menagerie (accompanied by our rescued Tiki, and Lily, a toy poodle).
