March Fourth

March Fourth is the command
but this time the gray swoops down from the North
as the blue rises up from the South,
tearing across a tear stained sky.
Moaning and howling.
Twisting and turning.
Oak leaves rush off long stretches of pavement
and the remains pile higher and higher.

March Fourth is the command
and the Gray gathers its forces in a fierce fury
and fires with all of its strength,
blinding the Southern shores.
Dust and seaoats.
Dry earth and flood.
Sand dunes rise to block long stretches of ocean
and erode the pleasures of Sunday afternoon.

March Fourth is the command
and the blue Burst across the Southern sky
brushing away the furious gray.
Spinning and shaping.
Shoving and shouting.
Green rises through brown earth
and the Southern dome intensifies its blue.

We won!
Shouts the South,
tossing its hat gently into the Spring wind.

as the gray creeps sheepishly far to the north
up to the poles at the top of the world.

Artist's Description

The mysteries and tumult of the March skies and the delicious victory a southerner feels at the end of the month when the soft warm moves in and the harsh heat stands at bay is something I had to try to express in words, hence, March Fourth.
