Though closely related to wood avens, with which it hybridises, this attractive plant looks quite different. Orange-pink flowers with erect petals and purple sepals can be seen nodding at the end of long stalks. The round unlobed leaves are mainly found at the base. The feathery seed heads follow the flowers. The underground rhizomes smell of clove oil. Water avens likes marshes, wet woodlands and damp rock ledges. It is an ideal marginal or addition to the bog garden and is not at all invasive.
