The Vampyre Sonnet

Unwanted specters furl their wings in fright
while sleep begins its fast and deep descent;
black shadows in the corners tempt the night
and echoes of strange voices won’t relent:

“How cruel it is to live unending life
and suffer through the cent’ries all alone;
no real love, just solitude and strife –
a weakness that is searching for the bone.”

Misunderstood and helpless to fate’s ways –
a victim and tormenter wrapped in one –
the darkened ghosts of Night come out to play
but deep within, their spirits come undone.

“We have no rest, and deep inside we’re sad
that you fear death while living drives us mad.”

Artist's Description

I’ve had sympathy for vampires ever since reading the beautifully crafted Dracula. I’m not Twilight girl; I love the old, the traditional, and the macabre streams of vampire fiction. :)

Sonnet Format: Shakespearian

I’m pleased to have won 1st placement in C.O.R.E.’s “The Vampire Writing Challenge” – I created this piece for the challenge, and I’m truly honored to have been voted in! Thank you!
