Artist's Description

Watercolor and Acrylic on artboard, highlights with gum arabic

“… everything on the earth has a purpose, every disease an herb to cure it, and every person a mission.”
~ Morning Dove, Salish

I painted this after seeing a Native American man in an old history book with his face painted in the black and white pattern you see here, and after reading Charles De Lint’s short story, “The Bone Woman.” De Lint’s lady is far different from mine, but the inspiration sprung from that source. ;)

People have told me that this painting can symbolize many things. Why is the Bone Woman tied in ropes? What hides beneath her painted mask? What will she do with the bones and feathers that adorn her? The answer is: I don’t know! This is as much a mystery to me as to anyone else who takes the time to wonder. For me, she is a wise woman, a healer, an ethereal being made human through flesh, blood, and bones. The ropes came on their own: I have the feeling that our Bone Woman is experiencing a feeling of mental confinement that manifests itself into ropes. Who can help the world and its people? She can do many things, but not everything: and it is guilt, perhaps, that leaves her a prisoner of sorts. Will the trees untie her? … There could be other reasons. I’d love to hear yours.
