Artist's Description

Built on what is now Lytham Green the windmill is the landmark that every-one sees when they come to Lytham. One of several mills on the Fylde , Lytham Mill was worked untill 1919 when a fire destroyed most of the machinery . Rebuilt and renovated several times since, the Mill now houses a permanent exhibition of the mill and of bread making, a tableauxof Lytham life during the last 100 years and various memorabilia and models .
Next door to Lytham Windmill is the old Lytham Lifeboat station constructed mainly of cobble stones these being a feature of many Lytham buildings. The Shipwrecked Mariners Society later replaced by the RNLI first stationed a lifeboat at Lytham in 1851 and the 12 lifeboats that have been stationed in Lytham over the years have saved hundreds of lives . For many years the old Lifeboat House was a museum telling the story of the Lytham lifeboats from 1851 to the present day . It is hoped the grade II listed building which closed in 2004 will re-open to the public in 2010 with a new exhibition .Lumix DMC-TZ6
