soft brown kites

today i will make a kite,

like we used to…

i will forage falkland’s brush-laden crest for bamboo
to find that shade of wood;
the dark tinge of green, six years deep that
reaches at my hand

I will strip the bark clean
split the whole into six pieces
with the far edge of a lass, fresh-filed;

the longest- 4ft long by 3 inches thick
will be the backbone-
the belly which will swallow the breeze.

I will find the thick yellow thread
waiting patiently, months behind the watnot
to bind the corners five times over
where the joints of the bamboo cross

until the wood is too stiff to be jarred by will

then, after i paste plastic fragments across the empty spaces
I will make it a tail
with two long streams from an old cotton sheet

and when finally i ask it to fly…
I will hope, that unlike us—
this kite will not buckle against the wind.
