January Thirteenth

Canon in D rehearsed
down the hall— It’s said
time decants all music
to clarity.

Yesterday, last weekend,
rain and sodden leaf.

Today, this good blue sky,
even clearer beyond
storm windows.

I lay my head
on the quilted coverlet
where we made love.
I touch the points
of a star, a flock
of gingham triangles.

In this world of fragments
how can there be
so much to love?
