Artist's Description

Fort Nelson is part of the ‘ring of steel’ built to defend the City of Portsmouth from attack during and after the Napoleonic wars. Fort nelson is only part of the Massive defense network surrounding Portsmouth Harbour & also extending out into the ‘The Solent’. At the time of Building these were considered ‘State of the Art’. Consider this- these Forts were actually built to Defend against NAPOLEON. , from a land attack, so your actually looking at the BACK ?.
This Fort is actually on top of Portsdown Hill looking down onto the Harbour.
There are so many Kill Zones designed into this building, it makes you shiver when walking around the outside. They were never attacked, Because Horatio Nelson defeated the Enemy at the Battle of Trafalgar. Cutting off Supply & Transport capability, This made the Land Attack impossible. Not often spoken of these days, thats why Nelson is such a KEY figure in UK History. He may have been the only thing to stop that invasion, we could have been French if not for him. Due to the MASSIVE expense of these fortresses ( that were never attacked) they were then referred to as Lord Parmerston’s Folly’s.
Nothing could be further than the Truth, They are Real & were designed to Wipe out anything & anybody that got too close.
