Artist's Description

Washed up bullkelp on one of the wild west coast beaches near Temma in Tasmania’s north-west.
Bullkelp (Durvillaea potatorum) is a type of algae. thousands of tonnes of it are washed ashore in Tasmania annually by the frequently rough Southern Ocean seas.
It is eaten by cattle that frequent the coastline properties and also supports a kelp gathering industry at Marrawah and on King Island.
It supports communities of shorebirds that nest amongst it and feed off sealice, insects and other bugs that frequent it.
