Artist's Description

During the civil war, confederate general Patrick Cleburne caused a stir in the Confederate army by signing his name to a letter suggesting the emancipation of slaves who would fight with the CSA to drive back the northern invaders. The Confederate congress eventually passed legislation to this effect, but it happened so late that the freed slaves never saw battle.
