This ornate structure houses the stairs which at one time lead to a Preaching Gallery which would have been situated over the Rood Screen.
This was removed possibly at the time of Cromwell. I have no notations to back this up but heard somewhere that the Cromwellian troops were billeted in the church on the condition that they did not damage any of the artifacts. However, all the decoration (similar to that on the Stair Tower) have been removed from both the rood screen and pulpit and the preaching gallery has also been removed.
Church of St. Mary, Totnes, Devon, England.

Canon Powershot SX610 HS

The Parish & Priory Church of St Mary (Totnes Devon) was completed in 1450 and is at least the second church on this site, its predecessor being dedicated in 1259. There have probably been churches on the same site for over 1000 years.
The late medieval church of St Mary with its 120 feet (37 m) high west tower, visible from afar, is built of rich red Devonian sandstone (Wikipedia)
