Artist's Description

The original Almshouse of St. John The Baptist and St. John The Evangelist is the best surviving example of a medieval Almshouse in Wessex. (Sherborne, Dorset, UK) It was built circa 1437 to provide housing and care for 12 men and 4 women who were too poor or feeble to care for themselves. The building comprised a Chapel, a hall and dormitories above. Niches held statues of the two Saint Johns. The iron railings are Victorian.
The Almshouses have now become a residential home for elderly people.
