Artist's Description

I hadn’t done another key series in a little while because I wondered if I was offending women. It is not my intention but for us to gain empowerment. I think many women of my generation sold themselves short believing a pile of goods and realizing they only got beans after they committed themselves to a relationship that wasn’t going anywhere.

I think back in the day, women learned the art of patience. For the longest time, I heard as a child how patience was a virtue. I never knew what that meant until I had to wait for something. When I finally got what I was waiting for I had to ask myself, was it worth it? In waiting for my children to be born, the answer would definitely be yes. In waiting for my first car to finally get out of the garage for repairs, I wished I waited to have saved more money to get a better car. Would this patience also be true when waiting for the right person to come and find you?

It reminds me of this woman who is at least 20 years my senior. She had lunch with my children and when they told me about the experience, I was extremely surprised. They went to a restaurant and ordered their food. While my children waited to be served, this grown woman began to get restless and started using profanity because she felt she was waiting too long for her food. My children were not use to this behavior and when this same woman asked to take my children out again, I didn’t have to tell her no. They didn’t wish to go.

My children had been trained with how to behave and that patience is something to be cultivated. If never cultivated, it is never appreciated and therefore you cannot blame anyone but yourself when the product you have isn’t as good as someone else’s. How do you think the food was served with the woman with very little patience?

This work was created on 9×12 sketch paper with black ink, graphite, and gold gel ink.
