Artist's Description

For the New Year, I have made a commitment to chronicle the Sacramento River Delta in photographs. The more I look at this venture the more daunting the task appears. The Delta region is vast and filled with so much. With over 1000 miles of navigatable waterways, it is a wonderful recreation area. But is is also a huge agricultural area, is filled with wonderful small historic bridges and towns with their own history and festivals. The area carries a great deal of history as the main route from San Francisco to Sacramento and the gold country. It is also a unique ecosystem. The Delta area is threatened both by industrial pollution and with the need for water for agriculture in the central valley of California and the large population in Southern California. For this reason, I want to spend time here and hopefully through pictures and narrative bring awareness of the beauty of the area as well as it’s plight.

This is the Freeport Bridge that crosses the Sacramento just below the little hamlet of Freeport. It is a cantilever style bridge. The heavy weights at both ends are dropped pulling the bridge up at the center to allow boats to pass through.
