Artist's Description

I first met Phoebe in 2001. I had taken a new job and one of my programs was a residential program for homeless people with mental illness. Phoebe had been rescued by my house manager’s sister and came to live in the house. She lived there for several years and took such good care of the residents, taking turns sleeping with each of them at night. They loved her. When the program lost funding and had to close, many people went back to the streets and Phoebe had no place to go so she came home with me. Because of her early experiences, she hates being enclosed so held her in my arms while someone else drove us to my house. Once in the house, i set her down and she set off to explore. When I went to look for her, she had jumped up on top of my dryer and gone sound asleep. Guess she accepted her new home. She would never be a house cat but has always remained close to home, enjoying laying in the sun in the back yard or sitting on the front porch watching the world go by. As I said, many of the house residents ended up going back to the streets. Working in the clinic, I would often hear someone calling me from across the lobby, “Hey, Barbara, how’s Phoebe?” They didn’t forget her. Phoebe is getting quite old now. She can’t jump fences anymore and can’t even jump onto the bed to sleep with me. We built her a ramp to help her get up to the bed. She still loves the yard in the summer spending her days sleeping in the sun and drinking out of our little stream. She still likes to sit in the front if we are out there. In the winter, she prefers the house, sleeping in front of the fireplace. If the fire isn’t going she will sit there and let out a loud MAW! Phoebe has brought so much love and comfort to so many people including me….so…the fire always goes on when requested.

I uploaded this for a challenge but have always wanted to tell her story.
