Artist's Description

I checked my regulator, spit in my mask, and sunk into the deep blue water. I wasn’t planning to go far, just a bit deeper than I wanted to go snorkeling and trusting my lungs. And I was pretty sure I knew where to look; the ship’s sonar gave off the distinct reflection I was looking for.

Suddenly, the feeling – that feeling of being watched, stalked. I looked to the right. Nothing. I kept turning to see directly behind me. Still nothing. I looked up but it was unlikely a threat would be above me so close to the surface and my feelings were verified with no movement or shadows. As I completely my 360 circle, I saw the shark, less than a yard away. It wasn’t big and it didn’t look to be a serious threat to me but my heart raced as it looked directly into my eyes, then away, letting me know he let me live today…

Yeah, right. LOL! We have a large pet store in a strip mall with the biggest fish tank in town. Two sharks and a Moray eel reside there, being observed by gawking youngsters and oldsters alike. The sharks are so skittish it’s hard to even see them for more than a few seconds at a time. The eel tho looks like he’d have a grand old time with your leg!

This shot is so edited that I can’t even call it a photograph anymore. I had to burn out a ton of reflections from the lighting in the ceiling of the store, reflections of kid’s faces in the glass, reflections of MY face in the glass, the rest of the store behind the other side of the tank, etc. The lighting was miserable above the sharks so they passed in and out of shadows so quickly the camera lost them more often than not. All this and the only shots I got that didn’t have reflections ON the fish were so pixelated they looked like someone shot them with a paint gun. In the end, this is the best shot and…

But how often do I get to stand face to face with a shark slightly bigger than me (6’1") and not hurl in my mask and regulator? LOL! Since I haven’t been deeper than 6 inches in the ocean, this just ain’t gonna happen to this city boy! :-D

…and I’ve been convinced that the shot has some merit on its own and it will be allowed to stay in my gallery. Thank you all for your constructive comments!
