Artist's Description

In the heart of Sacramento, there are a few very old, broken-down hotels. These are the places of last resort for the fortunate: those who have enough money to stave off homelessness another month, week, or even a single day. When the terrible heatstorm came a few years ago, people died in this hotel because none of the rooms had anything other than windows to open for cooling. Some died sitting in chairs watching TV. Two died completely dressed in suits and laying on their beds as if asleep. Others fell either trying to leave or confused by what the heat did to their brains. No crime was committed; no one was accused. But the calls to tear down most of the hotels came again and again they were shouted down by the people who knew there was no other place for people living here to go.

These days, I take shots of the magpie couple about 200 yards from maybe two score homeless in tent cities across the river from this hotel. They are happy but cold at night. They will sleep easy when the heat comes to their riparian homes. But this hotel will remain, locked in another time, another century, releasing its dead to this century and enduring the years as a last refuge for those trapped within it.
