Artist's Description

We watched two of these beautiful birds aggressively defend their perfectly sized hole from other birds also looking for a place to stay. The couple would go after birds twice their size either together (to get a stubborn one moving) or alone (to keep a moving one moving faster). These are the first two I’ve seen and I was helped with the identification utilizing the aid of a field guide by John Muir Laws. The sun was setting so the white balance is actually correct, looking rather warm.

The location was the riparian wetlands of West Sacramento along the Sacramento River.
