Artist's Description

This is the older of the two historic bridges connecting the west side of Sacramento with the east side of West Sacramento. I know, sounds really messy but think ‘two different cities and two different counties’ and it’ll come to you eventually. :-)

This rusty old monster is approaching 100 years old and shows it. However, it’s also the only way for Amtrak to go west from Sacramento (using the lower level) and many of the commuters between cities to go both directions. My Ford E150 is barely able to stay in one of the tiny lanes and I fear for its mirrors even then.

Seeing this baby open is fascinating since it pivots on the central point 90 degrees to allow larger craft to pass on the Sacramento River below. It opens often but I wasn’t able to get a closer shot of that yet.

There’s one occupant in the central control house opening and closing the bridge manually. But if you’ve heard of the fatal accident on our old bridge it was from the newer Tower Bridge and not this ancient beastie.
