Artist's Description

From the same day as the other Tower Bridge shots but much earlier in the evening. I was on the roof of a parking structure in Old Sacramento to try and capture the full moon as it rose over the cityscape. By the time I got all the way up there, it was windy, freezing, and the tableau was horrid with construction cranes and partial buildings in the foreground and nothing lit up in the background. Then the cops came. (sigh) There’s nothing quite as suspicious as a single black guy with a camera on the roof of a parking lot aiming at the moon.

Anyway, this shot was a throwaway when I took it because I missed the sunset while trying to get the moonrise before the cops locked me up until midnight. LOL! I only took this single shot. But once I got home, the computer told me I had a little gem, with matching colours from side to side and mimicked in the colours of the bridge and its lighting. Note there can be no reflected light from the sunset on the side of the bridge facing east.

As a side note, I spent a small fortune trying to get this image enlarged and framed at the local FedEx/Kinko’s copy shop. They never even came close. There were obvious lines between the colours in the sunset, nothing matched hue, and they didn’t think anything was wrong! I had to get a manager to get my money back and he said the copiers ‘needed to be re-calibrated’ but his best photographer in the store would make it work on a special machine that costs a ton per print. They’d give me a free one. Four bad prints later, Kinko’s admitted they couldn’t print a sunset as delicate as this one no matter how hard they tried.

I went to RiteAid Drug Store, put a flash drive with the image in a $0.25 printing kiosk, and it nailed the shot in 60 seconds. I took both prints back to Kinko’s and asked them why their machines costing hundreds of thousands of dollars couldn’t do what drug store’s PC could do. I wasn’t exactly escorted out but the thundering silence left my ears ringing…
