Artist's Description

This "video capture* is not offered as anything more than record of the Life & Times of the place I call Weedy Field, California. If you’re new to Red Bubble (or new to my galleries), please see this as strictly a funny inclusion to show off two of my friends at home.

ROTFLMFAO! This is a squirrel who’s name I can’t remember and Jake the Jackrabbit, hubby of the deceased Jill. Jake and I have known each other from afar for years but only recently (since Jill died) did he choose to be closer to me. He has come within 12 inches and will probably eat from my hand eventually. :-D

Jake is seen eating at his pet dish, something he does only when he feels like it; he’s not a daily visitor nor dependent upon me in any way. After Jill died, I started putting birdseed in the bowl because I wanted the wild songbirds to hang around where I could photograph them. When I had my first heart-warming encounter with Jake, he was nibbling birdseed off the ground and I was filming Super8 mm tape instead of my usual digital imagery using Nikon DSLR cameras. On that first day he came to me, ran around me in a circle of less than 15 feet, stopped to look into my eyes, and hop off a lot slower than jackrabbits usually travel. I was STOKED, needless to say!

Last week, Jake proved he’s nothing like Jill yet tolerant of me. He hid from me and teased by making noises in the leafs, refusing to come out until I was leaving. He also doesn’t care to be backed-down by a squirrel while Jill departed for ANYTHING from a sparrow to loud bluejay. This squirrel came from behind Jake and looked for peanuts because he knows me and that I carry them for him if he wants them. It came closer and closer to Jake, finally stopping within inches behind him. Jake was OK until then. That got him to raise his head and stop chewing. Silly squirrel tho hops up beside him and “asks” him if he’s got any peanuts! This is that moment. What followed was some hysterical interaction between two animals who don’t fear each other but don’t particularly wanna be buddies either.

Bummer was that I was set up with precisely the wrong gear to capture this well. I have the D90, the 18-55mm lens, and “movie mode”. I could have had up to 300mm with the Nikon or more than that with the Sony HandiCam with auto-focus and automatic lighting compensation. I did my best to salvage this screen capture direct from the digital file using Windows Vista’s Snipping Tool. I think I can do much better once I have the video processed but I couldn’t wait to show off some serious funny business. :-D

Again, forgive me for the terrible, tiny image. This is gonzo photography at it worst but Weedy Field at its best. LOL!
