Artist's Description

Here’s this year’s addition of the annual outdoor display. It troubles me tho: we’re in so much debt that the State is forcing employees to take unpaid vacation days (called “furlow days”). There’s much talk about the unprecedented cuts in public services coming because politicians failed to maintain realistic usage of my tax dollars. So how much did the State pay for this? Was the expense donated by a wealthy resident? Did it just get “added to the bill”?

It’s coming to the point where we’ll be forced to have a true democracy instead of a republic. In the former, everyone votes for everything directly; in the latter, representatives are elected to do the voting for us. When you see it as simply as it actually is you can tell where it’s all falling apart. We’ve got people in a position to open my wallet for me, spend more than I have in it, and send me a bill for the remainder. Huh?

Just like my Korg Workstation, the good comes with the challenging. But when the challenging becomes a bigger liability than ‘the good’ one gets from it. One must decide if paying thousands of dollars for a perfectly good tree to be killed, transported halfway across the state, dragged onto public property to be “stood” in the centre of grass sprayed with extra green colour (True. I’ve seen them do it and call the process “gardening”.), adorned with thousands of lights that use less electricity (tho use it any costs), and then reverse most of the procedure after Christmas time is worth the bucks. Sure, I’d hate to see people unhappy they still have their money in their pockets but no dead tree.

It seems I write this rant at least once a year, usually for the same occasion. If so, forgive me for having a 364 day memory. :-)

Absolutely nothing was done to edit this shot other than cropping. I spent quite some time going thru details and scores of test shots trying to time the passing cars for the light trails to appear as interesting as possible.

While shooting this shot, scores of others from other angles, and over an hour of Super8 mm tape to create a video for a sick relative, I was asked to shoot two couples who had come from outside America to this spot. Both had small pocket rocket cameras that were of the highest quality; neither could do effectively do a shot of them in front of the tree without making a mess of both. I offered to take their shots and email the results to them. I didn’t even consider charging money for bringing ‘love from Sacramento’. But I did hurry up the downloading of images from the camera to do edits and send off their shots within 60 minutes of shooting them. Odds are neither couple checked their email that quickly so I’m hoping they were surprised. ;-)

This image was featured in both The Communities Group and Northern California Style group within hours of each other. I thank most deeply the kind moderators and members of both outstanding groups. :-D With that much interest I need to offer to donate any profit I receive from sales to the funky State Of California. It’s the only budget “broker” than my own…
