Artist's Description

Bill Smart is an incredible guy and he plays bass while singing in the band in which we’re both members. He does both with great skill but the thing that will ‘get you going’ is some of the wild and crazy expressions on his face while performing. Here I am trying to concentrate on playing a song/taking live band shots/waving at people I know in the crowd/sipping my 151 & Pepsi/interacting with the current focal point of the moment and his H-U-G-E tongue suddenly comes out! Just because he needs both hands to play (most of the time) is no reason to pose as the avatar of the Rolling Stones, is it? I’m holding down some sort of accuracy with my performance and holding up a Nikon D80 with whatever hand is currently free and WOOOOOOOOAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!! I almost fainted dead away – and I’m straight! Geeeeee!!!!!

Anyway, there are some performances that go well and some that crash and burn; most stay comfortably somewhere in the middle. This one was going down in flames almost from the first notes but we didn’t know it yet. So Billy and I are playing away while all sorts of things are going awry on both sides of the stage and I pick up the D80 to start shooting the band live. But here comes Billy’s beastly oral appendage and I drop the freaking camera (which is strapped) onto my chest at something like a 90 degree angle, leaving a dent in a rib I’ll have to live with forever, breaking my already tenuous concentration upon entertaining the adoring crowd, and seriously jeopardizing my timing in the song. Needless to say, I missed the shot by about one shaky inch in my left (camera) hand.

Like I said, some gigs just blow chunks when poop occurs and I got exactly zero good “straight” shots to commemorate the 25th Anniversary Celebration of Nevada County’s SYRCL. But since a good portion of the band would probably not like to be reminded of our little ‘arsenal of accidents’ masquerading are a highly professional gig, I made abstracts of all the shots that actually got into the camera one way or another. Hopefully, you’ll find a bit of amusement in them, Bill’s tongue notwithstanding.
SYRCL is the South Yuba River Citizens League and was founded to keep a beautiful part of the Yuba River classified as “wild and scenic”.

My camera hand is usually my right hand unless I’m doing something like a solo on the keyboards. I switch hands from shot to shot as needed.

Shots from the performance stage are some of the most interesting shots because they show what I see from my keyboards as I’m playing. The band tolerates me because I’m a couple bricks short of a muffin in the sea.

Some of the actual disasters that happened on this gig include broken guitar strings, over-excitement due to so many other bands and a great audience, problems with other gear, and a general lack of cohesion due to a flexing schedule for our performance and (truth be told) my deep interest in showing off in front of better musicians but less interactive performers. In other words, I wanted to make an impression with some musicians who (quite correctly) didn’t choose me to be in their band. I wouldn’t have been a good fit with them but my musical pride took over backstage and I took it onstage with jumping, kicks, dancing, mugging for cameras, playing in excess of 20-notes per second, and some hearty laughter when I was handed a piece of percussion to play that I’ve never touched in my life. I know childish. Sue me.
