Artist's Description

In my continuing face-to-face series, here’s one of the alpacas from the Nevada County Faire. They are far to skittish for me to get this close by calling them or offering anything of interest. In fact, this was the biggest animal I’ve never been able to make much of a connection with. They noticed me and moved away. The biggest reaction I got was from the accidental camera flash and that reaction wasn’t one I was aiming for. LOL!

To get this shot, someone walked up behind Al while he was packing food (Groan! That one even made ME cringe and I have no shame whatsoever!) and basically scared him into focus at my end of the pen. The Nikon D80 was pre-focused manually and I’d already gotten enough good shots to know how to set the rest of the camera for the exposure I wanted. I didn’t get it all perfect any of the times I tried but this shot came closest. And since posing for close-ups isn’t an alpaca’s strongest suit, I took what I could get and bowed out of the shoot. I’d clearly bugged the nasal fur off the two critters but the two extremely patient and accommodating handlers were most gracious and I thank then sincerely.
