Artist's Description

This is a shot of my guide who is now as deeply engrossed in DSLR photography as I am. She’s using the new Nikon D60 camera with the kit lens. The D60 is a perfect size for her smaller hands being easier to reach the controls and much lighter than my D80, which she can’t hold for long. The D60’s 10.1 megapixel resolution means that she’s taking shots with exactly the same resolution as I am for $500 less and using a fully functional DSLR – unlike the others options available these days. Some of those options are unbelievable for point-and-shoot cameras because they can be purchased for less than $300 and also have 10.1MP. BUt they have no ability whatsoever to capture a shot like this one where I needed to be able to control the ISO and aperture to get the depth of field and the full range of lighting.

The location, Bloody Run Creek, CA, is rich in different lighting situations and can be a formidable challenge for a newbie. Cat used a Sony point-and-shoot the first trip and wasn’t at all impressed with some of the shots that didn’t work at all. With a DSLR, all that changed. If one has an opportunity to take out the old pocket rocket along with a Nikon D60 (or other digital single lens reflex camera), do it and see the difference, even using nothing more than the presets and PROGRAM mode. Seeing the difference in the same shot from the two camera types will make a DSLR photographer out of anyone. :-)

BTW, I don’t know what the large-leaf plants are but they STILL look like hobbit hats to me, ergo the title. ;-)
