Artist's Description

The Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet, or Mothball Fleet, is one of three locations where National Defense ships are held in varying stages of readiness for emergencies. They look like hell because the painting over the waterline was discontinued, mostly being cosmetic. some of these ships are part of the Ready Reserve Force and can be activated in as little as five days. 172 ships like these were actually used in Vietnam. One of the ships stored at Suisun was the GloMar Explorer that Howard Hughes built for the CIA.

The Coast Guard uses these ships for fire fighting training and Marines from around the country practice ‘storming vessels at sea’ with small crafts and helicopters against the Mothball Fleet.
