Artist's Description

The falls weren’t all that much, certainly not as spectacular as the hike to them past the giant redwoods and the forest fire recovery growth. Sure, the water was flowing (considerably more than I imagined from the looks of the creek we followed!) and the forest was wonderful. But there was a horrid man-made spillway dam that created a rather nasty pool.

Things would have gone smoothly and I’d have been quite happy to just hike back when I spied all the awaiting Stellar Jays I’d been waiting to photograph up close. Problem was that I had nothing for them in the backpack (a correction I will made and a goof I’ll never repeat) and they weren’t all that interested in posing ‘for free’. So I was “brilliant” and tossed a small stick to attracted one’s attention. Bingo. Got it. And boy was it pissed! (sigh) The good news is that you can see a Stellar Jay fairly close – one striking tho common bird. The bad news is that you can see it as photographed by a photographer so rattled by the racket of a bird I badly annoyed that the shots are all “flashed out”, making the bird’s wings look funny.

Peanuts going next to insect repellent and #90 sunblock in the camera bag…
