Artist's Description

This is Zip from Weedy Field, Rancho Cordova, CA just outside Sacramento in a rapidly growing area. Moments before, Zip fledged and flew out of the nest for the last time. Her body, about as big around as the size of an American nickel, was so short that even her tiny wings were twice as long. Only later did I discover Zip had a wing issue and couldn’t fly anywhere near as well as her contemporaries nor other hummingbirds in general. She could fly rather well backwards and displayed that while playing around me but she never did do the classic ‘dive and looping flight’ of her type of hummer. And when she had to fight for her personal territory in Weedy Field, she was badly outmatched and chose to fight from a perched position. And when two hummers both went after her, I intervened because she didn’t have a chance. They were poking her from two vectors at once and she couldn’t even see them both at the same time.

Zip stayed with me the entire season, buzzing around my head whenever I was outside and generally as close as a dog would be to a human. It was hecka fun until her time to migrate came. She waited until everyone else was gone before leaving but she did leave and never came back, as far as I can tell.

But we had a blast for a few months: human and hummer! LOL!
