Artist's Description

and the seals and birds are feasting. Photographed at Schuster’s Bay, Cape Town, South Africa. Around November to January there are huge shoals of Sardines that pass our Cape shores – heading east towards Agulhas. The predators – fish, birds, sharks and dolphins – feast and frolic.

The sardines that do not stop at Agulhas, follow a tongue of cold water up the east coast. This annual phenomenon is known locally as the sardine run. It is AMAZING!

Even more interesting is that recent years have seen the initiation and development of a wide-reaching project protecting the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem. This programme may well be contributing already to improved ecosystem health of this extremely rich and diverse ocean resource.
