Artist's Description

A series of five tiny paintings for a miniatures contest at art college that I didn’t enter because the paint wasn’t dry before school on the final day. It was part of a larger series of small paintings, a series of explorations of creating space and chaos within the context of abstract-expression-as-comic-panels.

This particular polyptych was actually carefully painted in stages where each of the five parts was rearranged to connect with the other panels in several different configurations. One layer was painted in one configuration and allowed to dry, and then the next stage was painted over top in another configuration; rinse, repeat.

Each layer left lots of space to allow the previous layers to show through. I started with more textural patterns and built up to the more specific bits of colour that represented the movement of the piece. I may have even had a story to tell with this piece, but please don’t ask me to tell you what it was; it’s been too long. I know, that doesn’t mean a whole lot. I guess you had to be there.

Technically, it could probably be considered an interactive piece, on those grounds alone. Imagine that: Interactive Abstract Expression.
