Artist's Description

Natural photo of a wild Barred Owl waiting for supper along Clarks Valley Road. My family kept telling me they were seeing an owl very close to home. Soooooo, after a long day of exploring Perry County….. we get home and only a mile from my house Sharon spotted the owl. Fortunately I had my “bigma” along, pulled off the road and took about 50 shots before it flew away.

Features:

Taken 2/12/11 just before sunset – natural light
Clarks Valley, Pennsylvania, USA
Canon EOS 60D, Sigma 150-500 lens
Hand held 500 mm, F/8, ISO 500, spot metering

The barred owl is the second largest owl in Pennsylvania. It has a stocky body, large dark brown eyes, and the puffy round head with no ear tufts. The horizontal bars on the throat and upper breast, and the vertical streaks on the belly give this owl its name. It is a vocal owl and is identified by its characteristic hoo-hoo-to-hoo – in the rhythm of “who cooks for you.” The barred owl preys upon a variety of small animals, including rodents, birds, frogs and crayfish.
