Artist's Description

An old church (Ukranian Greek Catholic Church), one of the few structures left standing in the town of Centralia, Pennsylvania, USA. This town was deserted due to an undergound mine fire.
Taken 1/16/10 on my road trip with some fellow Redbubblers.

  • Centralia (brief history)
In 1962, an underground coal fire began that spread beneath the town of Centralia. In the early 1980s the ground began to collapse which eventually led to the condemnation of the town in the 1990s. The government spent millions of dollars to acquire properties and relocate residents, although some still remain today.
