Hobbit Hut Lore

This is for all the folks that have been enjoying the Hobbit Hut series….

The last time I was out photographing local treasures, I made a point of not only asking permission to go on to the property, I also asked what some of these little houses were originally built for.

I was told by one gentleman that the cold water that comes up from the ground in a ‘spring house’ on a dairy farm was often used to keep the milk cold in the warmer months. They used some kind of trough system and the moving water cooled the milk and prevented it from spoiling too quickly. And the water itself was used for other purposes, as well. They built a house over it for sanitary/temperature reasons.

Some of these little huts were used as a ‘summer house’. No, they aren’t just going through the seasons with the naming of them… a summer house was a place where they could take food after cooking it in the main house, and relax and enjoy their meals without having to deal with the heat generated by cooking, as well as the summer heat. Personally, I think it’s a wasted plan… because once you’re up over 100 degrees, it’s just numbers…. and I ain’t hungry.

Most folks now use them for storage, and some of the larger ones were for farm hands, cattle hands, ‘guests’… if you will, that didn’t live in the main house. Some of these may well be used as guest quarters now… as many of them still have fireplaces and that sort of convenience. I think they could easily be modified to suit most guest needs… and they are terminally cute, in my opinion.

I will ask more people I meet along the way for their Hobbit Hut Lore as I find folks who will be willing to let me trudge about on their property… but I am often able to get the shot from the road, not requiring permission. Just thought you might be interested in this little bit of American farm land history.

If you truly do like the Hobbit Hut series, feel free to drop a comment or a B-mail… and if you really don’t… you can tell me that, too. It’s okay.. I can’t whack you one from this distance….
