It’s all about the troll who lives under the bridge,
The girl without a father,
The boy who had a third eye,
Hidden in his forehead,
A radiant steely gem,
The color of rubies.
It’s about the time the horse ran away and then was found,
The moment of revelation in the rainy garden,
Next to the tomato plants
And behind the sunflowers.
It’s about wanting something you can’t have,
And about wanting nothing much at all.
It’s about the secret recipe for catfish chowder
That came out of that day on the lake,
Two generations ago,
When the big whiskered fish gave himself up
And throngs of hungry people ate for days.
It is, in fact,
About being fed,
And about feeding the hungry.
It’s about making sure people understand.
It’s about standing by the road when the car comes by
With blue steam coming out of its hood,
And then what happens next:
Kindness, conversation, understanding, redemption,
a story:
a chance to make
Things happen a different way
This time.

Artist's Description

I wrote this little poem as part of an assignment for a class in graduate school last summer. My focus in this class was on the value of narrative writing in the middle school Language Arts classroom. In this country, eighth grade students don’t have the choice of writing a narrative for the big standardized writing assessment; the piece they write has to be either persuasive or expository. I don’t like how narrative writing is being devalued in this way and others in the middle school writing curriculum, and my research as well as my creative work had to do with the importance of written storytelling.
