Artist's Description

“Songkran” is the Thai name for new year’s eve buddhism (theravada) based on the lunar calendar.

Traditionally, all over the country, people go back to their family and show respect towards elderly giving some perfumed water in their hands. This tradition is very strong within the families, but it also gives pretext to huge water battles in the city streets. Water is, symbolically, a way to wash yourself and the others with dust and dirt of the past year.

In Bangkok, i could see many groups, all ages together, dropping water and white mud on everyone, but with a very friendly and smiling atmosphere. During the three days of these celebrations, it is absolutely impossible to walk the streets without being targeted and showered at every corner!…

I shot this serie of pictures when integrating one of these groups on Rama IV Road… after having previously being wet and maked up with mud ;-)

On this picture, you can see how happy is this man to cover my face with mud!! :-)) That was the price to pay i guess…
