Wistful

Through shivering blades of grass
I am a body lying in shards.

Look down upon me though,
and I am complete.
On either side are my siblings,
we compare how each of us see the clouds,
marvel at how fast they float.

Do you remember wondering about
how your feet would stay put
instead of falling through the clouds?
How you would climb a rainbow
without sliding back down,
over, and over, and over?

The grass always smells like memories in
the summer,
have you noticed that?

Cotton skirts and white singlets came out
and the water never seemed cold,
and sandcastles from the bucket
occupied you ‘til the tide chased you away.

Cousins surrounded you every Christmas,
but not so much now.
I wonder. Do they so fashionably flop
onto the grass and think of me?

Through shades of quivering green
I am girl through twenty years,
watching a giant heart
race through the sky.
