I took this picture while I was in the beautiful city of Kyoto (One of my favorite places in Japan).
The first record of a paper umbrella in Japan is from a mural painted in 1309. The umbrella gained greater popularity in the late 1700s. Similar umbrellas can be found in China as well. The difference is in the construction. The Japanese umbrellas are made with a finer cut of bamboo which produces a more slender appearance. By the mid 1800s, these umbrellas became a common fixture in people’s homes. This is also around the same time that the first folding umbrellas were made.
