The Glacier Was Too Tall

A moment please.

Taking the breath into my lungs, I heaved inwards, a gust of air unlike at least the last twenty breaths I had taken. Sometimes I just forget to breathe, and end up cinching in those tiddly little things, until it almost feels like I’m about to pass out. I need to remind myself, tie the string on, wake myself up. Start thinking again.

The boat moves slowly, sliding over the water. A matchbox astrewn in a swimming pool. I could almost see the big wave come over and squash us into itself – funny how water can be a solid when it really wants to. But, it won’t happen today. Not here, anyway. It’s cold. Foggy. Most unlike a gentle beach.

The tourists chatter amongst themselves. But I’m by myself today. They smile at me, sharing something, but I politely decline. Not today. I just want time to think.

We putter along, until I can see the whiteness. It’s pure and bold, like compressed salt. I want to reach out and touch it, but it’s too far away. I look up. I honestly can’t see the top. It is a skyscraper. Literally.

The tourists oohh and ahh and point. Yes, it’s all new. They’re cooing to their new experience. Better let them enjoy it.

I pitch the wheel towards the middle. Time is up now. I look back at them, still in the middle of their bubbling. I don’t want to disturb. I won’t announce it.

The boat is gaining speed. I glare at the middle. I see a crack, a faint sound betrays it to me. It’s breaking apart. Better take advantage.

I push the speed forwards. It’s belting it out, now. I’ll take them all with me. Into the whitness. Into the glacier.

It’s short and I was a bit tired. I wonder how it turned out?
