Grandmother's Ghosts

My maternal grandparents had the coolest house. I dont’ know exactly what made it so cool, but I loved being there. It was one of those old houses that made a circle…you know those? Wonderful eat-in kitchen with a fireplace….small dining room… the left a very small…tiny even…room with storage closets on the wall and a small twin bed (this was where I slept)…..from the dining room again..straight into the living room with fireplace and bay window…on to the left a bed room…straight to another bedroom with bath…back to bed 1 and turn left…here you have (my) tiny the right the bath…back out and straight my gparents bedroom…
My grandmother was a teacher and she would stay up late grading papers, my grandfather was with the highway department and had to be away from home alot. I loved keeping my grandmother company while he was away….she was always afraid there by herself.
We use to hear what sounded like a radio from the back of the house, when I’d be in the kitchen with my grandmother….I thought it was a radio…my grandfather, when he was home, listened to his little radio every night while going to sleep…one type of ball game or another….sometimes I’d go to the back to turn the radio off if it happened to be a bit loud…it wasn’t on. I never really put my attention to it. It was just a bit confusing, nothing more.
When I got older…my grandmother confided that she guessed the house was haunted…this was hard for her to say, she was a very religious woman who believed that when you died, you either went to heaven….or….hell…but she said she didn’t know what else to think….she said that she could hear people talking in another part of the house…..and doors closing….
I do know that when I was sleeping in a little bedroom in the center of the house, it felt as though something was in the room with me sometimes….I could see deeper shadows that seemed to shift and move….I would squeeze my eyes shut hoping whatever it was would just leave…..
Animals did not like being in the house……….I brought one of our cats to stay with us for a few days when I was about 15… wouldn’t come out from under the couch the whole time I was there….it seemed terrified…….I only brought one dog in the house….I was 20 and only staying one night…..the dog, a pomeranian, began to growl during supper and would not hush…’s hair raised and it rushed into the living room and began barking at the ceiling over the Television, which wasn’t on….after about 15 minutes he calmed down again… but kept a watchful eye on the door…..
