Artist's Description

This icon originally hung at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Portland, Oregon. It is now at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church which is near Gresham, Oregon on Portland’s East side. St Timothy (not to be confused with the Apostle) was the Bishop and patron saint of Marmara Island, an Island in the sea of Marmara in present day Turkey that used to have Greek majority. Because the Treaty of Lausanne mandated a “repatriation” in 1923, most of the Greek people who lived on Marmara Island their entire lives were forced to leave and the Turks took over the Island. Many of those Greeks that lived on that island immigrated to USA and settled in the Pacific Northwest.
