Artist's Description

Pisa is near the west coast of Italy, in Tuscany and is famous for the Leaning Tower. The Leaning Tower is the bell tower for the Duomo and it is situated in the ‘Field of Miracles’ next to the Baptistry and the Camposanto Monument.

Work began on the famous tower in 1173 and 12 years later at the completion of 3 levels, it began to lean, but in the opposite direction to today. Wedge shaped blocks of stone were inserted into the base causing it to lean in the opposite direction again!! As a result, work on the tower was not resumed. However, 100 or so years later, 3 more storeys were added by various architects in an attempt to counter-balance the lean. The original builder remains anonymous to this day. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a bell tower, which was the work of Tommaso Pisano in 1350, when he completed it with a bell chamber.

The Piazza dei Miracoli (Feild of Miracles) was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. In addition to the Duomo (cathedral) and its leaning bell tower(La torre di Pisa), the Baptistery and the Camposanto (Holy Feild) Monument, the piazza is one of the main centres for medieval art in the world.
