happened upon

Even though he down played his
looks, my father has always known
deep down
how handsome he really is
and so has my mother

so, when we go to visit the only
friends he has from a ruptured childhood
that was aborted, then saved for the
amusement of his relatives, for they
were never family, my only thought is
will my mother notice how he looks
at the wife of his best friend

poolside conversations run to
local politics and what movies are on
tonight, the hot dogs are sweating
and the burgers have shrunk the
appropriate amount as the flesh cooks
outside the grill too

no more iced tea and it is my job
to refill the plastic container moonlighting
as an iced tea bottle when it really began
as an apple juice container, so I snatch
the screw on top, wrap the over sized towel
around my developing shoulders and
brave the roasted concrete without
sandals to see how long I can walk
before I have to give into the pain

around the corner, up the chipped stone
stairs, through the outer door that
sounds like feral cats screaming at the
night, enough of a warning, one would
imagine, to announce the arrival of a
warm body entering the house

and there he is, too close to a woman
who is not his wife and the bottle
slips from my hand

what the door failed to do the bottle
accomplishes with vigor and suddenly
I am thrust into adulthood
something I was not prepared for
but happened upon
