as she lied with me
and to herself
about me
all I could think of was
how much I didn’t want
to lose her, but I
could not bring myself to say
those words that she sought
with the inflection and
intent everyone is so programmed
to listen for

I told her to leave

I stood outside of our
dialog observing the car
accident that it had become

there were no emotions
just empty words like spent
shell casings strewn all
over the sidewalk that houses
volumes of stories
with no endings just
broken sentences

we add to that library

I can see her walking
away even as she readies
her next line of defense
she is on her pulpit now
preaching about that stature
of men and their inability
to hold truth in their mouths
for longer than it takes to
shake loose their
most recent orgasm

is this really happening
to me?

I notice the sky
all at once
racing toward the past
when she spoke with
her eyes the absolute
absolution and we played
like children of the earth
and laughed as we made
love and tried to catch breath
together and said fuck you
to the boundaries as we
practiced what we preached

this toy spinning out of
control till it whirled upon
the edge of the glass table top
threatening to go over and I knew

I knew that it would be lost
but it was worth the ecstasy
which is what I named the children
born of our turbulence, ecstasy

while the cradle rocked
the bough broke
down we all came
arriving at this fractured
moment that will become
a memory

the choice in the crossroad
one of a broken path that
I walked away from
all the while watching her
attempt to put the pieces back
