kiss, hug

Nine sleeps til Christmas
They have to go
I have to stay,
She needs Christmas gifts
I have to work.

This swing, they’ve put me
In the Smelter
Pay has come through
She packs the car with the whole crew.

Two and a half hours
To the next decent town
Retail therapy
With three kids.

Stuck in the Smelter.

Sixty degree heat.

Celsius.

Iced coffee for breakfast.

Double demerit points
She knows this
Flat lonely road
Three kids stare out the windows.

A quick inhale panic
Followed by a quivered oh;

Her first roo
In the middle of the road.

Hard right
The roo still hits
Passenger rear end
Encites the car to dance flips.

Sweating bullets
Respirator rash
Eyelids reddened
From dust mixed with chemical.

Beautiful blonde hair
Twists during pirouettes
She was five
The roo too, didnt survive.

Ten and Seven
End up in one anothers arms
Somehow
Forty meters from the car
And she…?

She still has her phone
In her hand.

Texting me…

I don’t get a call
I don’t receive a text
I find out on Facebook
Tagged in a post.

I am sitting on an orange safety step
In a cool booth
On level four
Of the smelter.

Beds still made
They left this morning
Note left on the fridge
Luvya, cya tomorro xo.

kiss, hug
