rise and grind

The house sleeps
Silence in numbers
The night sky shines
Crystaline embers

A million thoughts
Lead back to one
As the starving mosquito lands
Craving my blood

Phone light reveals my haunched shoulders
On the pergola, attracting the bugs
My morning iced coffee
Now, half finished

Under four hours
Until I should be awake
But it is now, and here we all are
The bugs, the night, me and my iced coffee, awake

A feeling I cant shake
As the world begins its take
Fatigue will come, but not until
I have toiled and buckled, limp home

There is no romance
In the hours that I keep
There is no beauty
In a soul that cannot sleep

Start early, finish late
Hit the ground running
Hit a wall exhausted
Push through, finish your dinner

On the nod before the kids go to bed
Unable to be excited about her first day at school
Look at this fool
Wasting his life to provide

They all want my time
But I have little to spare
So I awake when theyre all asleep
Just so I can dream

The weekend draws nigh
My work day is planned
As they swim and play and laugh and cry
I am stuck, liaising with potential clients

This crick in my heel
And click in my knee
Is all I have to give
Think of the money

Iced coffee now gone
Cigarette at the butt
I creep inside and look at the time
Have a pew, three hours to go

Moonlight blazes through
Arms of trees finger the tin above
My entire world is asleep
But I have time for none.
