The dramatic contrast between the sensual young female figure and the imperturbable personification of death which is about to seize her, creates a modern “dance macabre” (the original title of the work was “The eternal drama”).
In the gesso the figure of the young woman was completely naked: the draping that covers the lower section of her body was added later, most likely on request of the client, when the statue was cast in bronze.
