Artist's Description

Entry for the Redbubble x State Library of Victoria #CreateArtHistory competition – botanical theme.

This botanical themed design was inspired by the Sturt Pea (Fanny de Mole) illustration generously provided by the State Library.

When visiting the State Library of Victoria, you’re met with the message “What’s Your Story?” Since opening in 1856, the library has been a part of our collective story, a space where we can learn, study and be inspired by those before us.

This botanical design celebrates the Library’s role in preserving wonderful collections that inform and inspire our community to flourish, today and into the future.

The collection of wildflowers each represent a state (or territory) floral emblem of Australia, symbolising the many people, from different backgrounds, who have visited the Library. The bees represent the pollination of ideas. The Commonwealth star; how we are united in our pursuit of knowledge.

The colour palette and layout were selected to create a fresh, modern feel, while calling back to the format of botanical illustrations found in the State Library’s collection.

The 11th February 2018 marks the State Library of Victoria’s 162nd anniversary. To commemorate, there are precisely 162 wattle flowers, each representing a year since the Library first opened.

The design has been adapted as a single illustration and pattern format for best display on Redbubble’s range of products.

Enjoy! :)
