I've always hated being called dude. In the late 90s I was a cook/patron in Montreal college bar called The Madhatter Library Pub (later the Mdhatter Cafe Pub the lamer name reflected the lamer location). At that time the term 'dude' was in full reruns after being plucked from it's proper place (Spicolli's lips in Fast Times at Rigemount High) & was falling out of everyone's mouth. From burnouts to those who pretended to be a burnout to jocks and beyond 'Hey dude!' was so very popular. Later they even made a movie out of the term, that's just how cool it was. At the time, if someone prefaced asking me for a hoagie or whatever with the term 'Hey dude...' I'd completely ignore them. I'd go on about my business until one of the staff would tell them 'Oh, did you call him 'dude'? Yeah, he won't respond if you call him dude. call him Billy.' It was that kind of place and I was that kind of guy. There was a thrash metal band in the late 80s called Scatterbrain who had a song titled "Don't call me Dude":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEr8SYqTc3s which I'd hum while I worked. I've wanted this shirt for ages.
