Artist's Description

On November 11th it is 91 years ago that The Great War ended.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 the peace treaty was signed.

Here is my contribution to the attempt to keep this day in our memory, so that this war will never be forgotten and so that we remember all those, who payed the ultimate price to keep the free world free.

This is a Scouting Experimental (SE) 5a. This particular machine was built by the Royal Aircraft Factory, and was flown by 2/Lt. A. P. C. Wigan during the early months of 1918 while attached to 24th Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. On March 6th 1918 2/Lt Wigan was shot down by Hptm. Adolf von Tutschek, Commander of Jagdgeschwader II, flying his Fokker DrI Triplane. Wigan survived the crash and was made prisoner of war.
Wigan was von Tutschek’s 26th confirmed victory. He would have one more before he himself was shot down and killed on March 15th by South-African ace Harold Redler flying another SE5a of 24th Squadron. Unfortunately Redler was later killed in a DH-9 crash.

What a waste….

By the way, this shows my newly finished 1/32 scale model set up in my back garden.
I’ve tried to tone it a bit, hoping to achieve an “olde” feel.
